The ANMF (SA Branch) and our members have received many heart-warming and much-appreciated outpourings of support from our sister branches interstate and also our federal office during this latest lockdown phase of the pandemic.

Australian Unions also lent their strength, posting “Solidarity with @ANMFSA – the whole union movement is behind you’’.

Please see, below, a message sent to ANMF (SA Branch) CEO/Secretary Adj Associate Professor Elizabeth Dabars AM addressed to all our members.

To our dear South Australian ANMF colleagues,

On behalf of all the members of the Queensland Nurses and Midwives’ Union (QNMU) I send our thoughts and solidarity at this most difficult time for South Australia.

The recent Adelaide COVID-19 cluster outbreak linked to hotel quarantine has this week resulted in a six-day hard lockdown. Firm and swift action is required to stop the spread of the novel virus and this is what your state government has determined to do. We appreciate that this is disruptive and also has a great impact on nurses and midwives given the significant additional work this lockdown entails for you and other health workers. We wanted to acknowledge this publicly and pass on our thoughts to you given the challenging times you are currently experiencing.

Such situations are so stressful and can at times be chaotic. We are indeed experiencing volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous times. You are in the midst of this right now and it can appear overwhelming. But you are up to the task.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been with us for most of the year, and has taken its toll. But nurses and midwives in your state have done and are doing such a magnificent job in keeping your community safe. The vast majority of people in South Australia are also doing their part by abiding by the strict lockdown measures implemented this week. The rest of Australia so appreciates the sacrifices you are making now to keep all of us safe by stopping the spread of the virus.

Nurses and midwives may not consider themselves heroes, indeed many bristle at the use of the term in connection to them or their work. We are doers who get on and do the job of protecting those in our care. But you are hard-working heroes right now, focused on providing expert care to those in such need.

We are thinking of you all at this challenging time. We are so very proud of your efforts and tenacity and are ready to assist you in any way we can. Your struggle is our struggle.

Take care and stay safe.

Warmest Regards,

Beth Mohle
Secretary – Queensland Nurses and Midwives’ Union
