NALHN agrees to discontinue flawed staffing calculator

29 August 2019

The ANMF (SA Branch) has met with Northern Adelaide Local Health Network (NALHN) management, regarding the concerns that were raised by members around staffing levels.

We are pleased to advise that NALHN has acknowledged the staffing escalation calculator they were using was incorrect, stating it will be removed immediately and making the following commitments:

  • Ensuring clear and robust processes are in place for escalation and Management will not refuse reasonable requests for additional staff;
  • Acknowledgement there is not an agreed acuity tool at this point in time, however the Daily Ready Reckoner provides a calculation for volume;
  • After Hours Duty Co-ordinator will be advised regarding escalation processes and triggers for WHU and to be responsive;
  • Staff will escalate based on both volume and acuity, however, will now apply the Daily Ready Reckoner to assessing the staffing requirement when patient numbers are more than 24.

Staff will be recording all incidents where additional staff has been denied and complete the ANMF (SA Branch) safe staffing forms and SLS.
