Australian first: UK Professor to address ANMF conference on dignity of care for older persons

19 June 2019

Not long after he graduated as a Registered Nurse, “a critical incident” prompted Wilfred McSherry to explore the role and relevance of spirituality and dignity in the provision of person-centred care.

“Making sense of these concepts in a practical, down to earth way,” the UK-based Professor says will be the focus of his address to this year’s ANMF (SA Branch) Annual Professional Conference. It will mark the first time the extensively published nurse will present his work in Australia.

“I will touch on the critical incident that occurred to me in the course of my practice,” he says of a presentation that promises to resonate with “anyone who is caring for people or working across the different fields of nursing and sector of health and social care.”

The UK-based Professor has had a career in nursing working as a Registered Nurse primarily within acute hospital care with a focus upon care of the older person and end of life care. His interest in the spiritual dimension developed alongside a realisation that this aspect of care was neglected and forgotten by some healthcare professionals.

He was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing for his unique contribution to nursing in the areas of spirituality and dignity, and he has published several books and articles addressing different aspects of the spiritual dimension.
