What is a HLT54121 Diploma of Nursing?

A HLT54121 Diploma of Nursing is your pathway to a career as an Enrolled Nurse (EN) in Australia. ENs work under the supervision of Registered Nurses (RNs) and are responsible for a range of care to support the health needs of patients. This could include medication administration, frontline health assessments, wound care and responding to emergency situations.

With a HLT54121 Diploma of Nursing, you’ll gain the skills and knowledge required to confidently provide person-centred care in a wide range of professional health care settings.

Employment Outcomes

Upon completion of a HLT54121 Diploma of Nursing, you will be eligible to apply for registration with Nursing & Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) as an Enrolled Nurse.

Program Units

To complete this qualification, students must complete 25 units of study, including 20 core units and 5 electives.

Industry placements

Industry placements are a required element of the HLT54121 Diploma of Nursing and are your first opportunity to gain firsthand experience in a varied range of health and care settings. You will acquire clinical experience in settings, such as private and public hospitals, community settings and aged care facilities.

Students are required to complete 12 weeks of work placement to obtain their HLT54121 Diploma of Nursing. This is completed over 2 blocks of 2 weeks, and 2 blocks each of 4 weeks. Each placement block requires fulltime shift work hours and an ability to travel to work placement location.

Admission Criteria

Before you begin your course application, make sure you meet the requirements listed below.

  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or above

  • National criminal history check and Department of Human Services (DHS), screening for Aged Care, vulnerable groups and working with children check and NDIS worker check

  • Physical ability to demonstrate manual handling skills applicable as a compulsory component of the course and the clinical care workplace

  • Evidence of English language and numeracy proficiency, demonstrated with an interview and a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment with ANMEC. In addition applicants will need to satisfy the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) English language entry requirement prior to acceptance into this course.

  • COVID-19 Vaccinations: Received your first, second and booster (or have evidence of booking to receive boosters) of a TGA approved or recognised COVID-19 vaccination prior to commencement

  • Influenza Vaccination: Received prior to Aged Care placement

  • Other Vaccinations requested for Acute placements

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander & culturally and linguistically diverse background applicants are encouraged to apply

  • Inherent requirements for nursing qualifications describe a range of cognitive, behavioural, and physical capabilities which are required for the delivery of safe care nursing

Fees

Subsided Training   The Diploma of Nursing is subsidised by the Government of South Australia and is available at the subsidised rate of $9,950 for eligible students.
 Concession is available for subsidised students who hold a current concession card at the rate of $7,600.

VET Student Loans (VSL)   Eligible students are entitled for loans up to a capped amount of $18,097 for this course.
 Students will be required to contribute the gap should the tuition fee exceed the loan cap.
 Students who are eligible for Subsidised Training can use a VET Student Loan to cover the remainder of their fees.

Full Fee Cost  Students not eligible for subsidies or VET Student Loan will be charged the full-fee cost of $22,320 for this course
