COVID-19 Updates

In relation to the rapidly escalating outbreak of Coronavirus across the world the below information is to direct nurses, midwives and personal care workers to the resources available.

Please note the advice provided on these pages is intended as general advice. If you have specific concerns, please contact the Duty Officer to discuss your particular circumstances by email [email protected]

We are advocating and seeking to work with the Government and Department to ensure that:

  • Appropriate resources including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) relevant to the area of practice is available. Members are urged to raise any concerns regarding the type or availability of PPE with their manager in the first instance and escalate those concerns if not satisfied with the response locally to our offices. Read previous correspondence here.
  • Staffing with appropriate skill levels is available to meet patient care needs in light of increased bed capacities and the expected surge in activity. We have sought urgent advice as to the numbers and type of staff needed to cope with the additional capacity created through the acquisition of beds at Wakefield Hospital, College Grove and the Repat. We have also sought urgent discussions over measures that will guide safe staffing discussions as demand increases in the coming weeks.  Read more here.
  • Paid special leave for all our members. We have launched a petition urging the State and Federal Governments to guarantee an additional 15 days of paid special COVID-19 leave for all nurses, midwives and personal care workers, to align with SA public sector provisions for permanent staff outlined in their recent Determination. Sign the petition.
  • An interim resolution to the Enterprise Bargaining process to create more certainty for members who are at the very coalface of this global pandemic, allowing them to focus on the needs of the community now and in the weeks and months ahead. Learn more about the EB campaign here.

Below is a message from CEO/Secretary Adj. Assoc. Professor Elizabeth Dabars AM, recorded on 19 March 2020 .

Resources will continue to be updated in coming days and weeks as the situation evolves.
