The Use Of Nurse Specials

Categories: Public Sector News

Over the past month, members at Royal Adelaide Hospital and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital have reported patients are increasingly being specialled within base nursing numbers. The ANMF (SA Branch) has raised this with Central Adelaide Local Health Network (CALHN) who has advised that Nurse Specials are to be approved by the Co-Director after an assessment of the patient and the overall unit acuity is made.

The ANMF (SA Branch) recommends that members continue to request Nurse Specials as clinically required. When the patient/ward acuity is increased and Nurse Specials within the numbers are unable to be safely managed within rostered nursing numbers, we encourage you to document each request and response in line with normal escalation procedures or protocols.

If patient safety is compromised at any time, please re-escalate concerns to management and submit a report via the Safety Learning System (SLS). Please also complete an ANMF (SA Branch) Safe Staffing Issues Report or contact your site ANMF (SA Branch) Officer on 8334 1900.
