Venous blood gases: Indications, limitations and interpretation

Venous blood gases are capable of providing information into tissue oxygenation, systemic carbon dioxide (CO2) levels and pH balance, however, because they are less accurate than arterial blood gases, they are less widely used. Nonetheless, nurses and midwives should have an understanding of their use and limitations in the clinical setting.

We have recently published an online CPD module on venous blood gases. It can be found in the topic area of ‘Diagnostics and treatments’.
