Put the 'Care' back into Aged Care as PM announces election date

14 April 2022

South Australians are heading back to the polling booths just over two months after voting in the new State Government.

The ANMF has been advocating the Fix Aged Care pledge which calls for:

- RN 24/7 – at least one registered nurse on site at all times
- Minimum mandated care hours and the right skills mix
- Greater transparency – funding tied to care
- Improved wages and conditions

In the Adelaide Hills-based seat of Mayo, Independent MP and long-term aged care advocate Rebekha Sharkie is a strong supporter of aged care and has signed our campaign pledge, as has Labor candidate and former ANMF President Marisa Bell and Greens candidate Greg Elliott.

All South Australia’s Labor candidates have committed to ANMF’s pledge including Louise Miller-Frost in the marginal seat of Boothby.

Greens candidate Jeremy Carter and Independent Jo Dyer have also pledged their support in Boothby.

Steve Georganas (Adelaide), Mark Butler (Hindmarsh), Amanda Rishworth (Kingston), Tony Zappia (Makin), Matt Burnell (Spence) and Sonja Baram (Sturt) make up the Labor contingent to sign a commitment.

In the Senate we have collected signatures and support from Labor’s Don Farrell, Penny Wong, Independent Rex Patrick, Centre Alliance’s Stirling Griff and Barbara Pocock (Greens).

Disappointingly, there has been an absence of any similar commitments from the Liberal Party.

“This election is a once in a generation opportunity to rectify years of erosion of standards resulting in wilful neglect in the aged care sector which has caused immense harm for residents, families, nurses and care workers.

“On May 21 there’s an opportunity to make your voice heard and make meaningful change to the aged care sector at the federal level,” ANMF (SA Branch) CEO/Secretary Adj Associate Professor Elizabeth Dabars AM said.

ANMF (SA Branch) will continue to hold political parties (and their candidates) to account for their policy positions, commitments and related action or inaction and share these political responses to our members in the lead up to the federal election.
