Lack of regional security ‘appalling’

22 April 2021

The ANMF (SA Branch) has hit out at the State Government over the lack of security in regional hospitals following the jailing of a man this week for assaulting two nurses in Mt Gambier.

"We are continually disgusted and appalled by the failure of the employer — and the ultimate employer of course is SA Health and the Government at large — to deal with this issue of violence and aggression," ANMF (SA Branch) CEO/Secretary Adj Associate Professor Elizabeth Dabars AM was quoted by the ABC.

“We are getting reports every day about people who've been hit, been punched or been strangled, and had hair literally ripped from their scalps," she said.

"It's unbelievable, it's shameful and the Government really needs to step in and force the hand of these local health networks."

Ms Dabars said that if permanent security officers to protect staff were being employed at the Whyalla and Port Augusta hospitals, why weren't they being hired at other regional hospitals such as the Mount Gambier and Port Lincoln hospitals?
