ANMF feedback on disability needs

3 June 2020

The ANMF (SA Branch) has responded to a recommended Model of Care for the delivery of health services for people with intellectual disability and complex health needs in South Australia.

The Model of Care document described how the SA Intellectual Disability Health Service (SAIDHS), previously known as the Centre for Disability Health (CDH), would provide clinical leadership in intellectual disability health and how it would partner with and build the capacity of mainstream health services in South Australia to deliver integrated, evidence-based, person-centered health care to people with intellectual disability state-wide.

This Model of Care is the result of extensive consultation and collaboration with stakeholders from across South Australia.

ANMF (SA Branch) staff and members have reviewed the document and believe that the development of the draft Model of Care provides a great opportunity to further develop the services available for people with an Intellectual Disability within South Australia.

Whilst the target group of clients for SAIDHS is for people aged 16 years and over with Intellectual disability, ANMF (SA Branch) believes that to support the life course approach and to reinforce and support a care continuum, a transitional model of care between the children’s and the adult services must be developed to ensure the continuity of services and funding for these clients.
